![]() Desmond Davis was the producer of both versions. In the modern version Celia Johnson replaced Marjorie Lane in the role of Kate Hardcastle. A traditional production with almost the same cast (including Eric Portman as Charles Marlow) was shown on 26 March with a repeat on 3 April. This version, billed as A Night at the Hardcastles, was adapted by Giles Playfair after a synopsis by his father, Sir Nigel Playfair (actor-manager of the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, who died in 1934) who had developed the idea as a feature film. On 16 and 24 April 1939 BBC Television from Alexandra Palace presented a modern version of the play with, as ‘The Scanner’ wrote in Radio Times, ‘saloon cars, cocktails, cigarettes and all the other things Goldsmith didn’t know about’ (17 March 1939, p. In 2008 Sky Arts screened an adaptation directed by Tony Britten with Sussanah Fielding and Mark Dexter. John Harrison staged it for The Sunday Night Play series in 1961, Roger Jenkins directed it again in 1966 for Theatre 625, and in the short-lived Stage 2 series in 1971 it was directed by Michael Elliott. Goldsmith’s play has been a favourite with broadcasters, with the BBC making three versions between 19. Vivian Pickles has a tiny role as the servant Pimple. The undoubted star is Paul Daneman who eventually overcomes his shyness in the company of ladies (he’s fine with serving maids) and wins Kate’s hand. Margaret Courtenay’s elderly Mrs Hardcastle is pantomime dame-ish, but Jane Downs as her daughter - the play’s central character - is winsome, witty and a delight to watch. He hopes that Goldsmith’s play will make him laugh. Woodwardknown to Goldsmith’s contemporaries as a comic actorweeping because comedy is supposedly dead. The playing from pretty much everyone is on the broad side, but the whole cast make effective use of direct-to-camera ‘asides’. She Stoops to Conquer, by Oliver Goldsmith, is a five-act comedic play with a prologue and an epilogue first performed in 1773 in London. The designer is credited as John Clements, presumably the producer responsible for the innovative film version of Ibsen’s The Wild Duck made for Associated-Rediffusion in 1957, about which I posted recently. The studio staging by director Roger Jenkins (later a stalwart on series like The Troubleshooters and The Onedin Line) is mostly penny-plain, although there is one startling shot from, as it were, the back a fireplace where previously we had seen live flames. Originally presented for schools audiences in three 30-minute segments, this version had been stitched together to be shown on National Education Television in the United States. And while at times the audio was echo-y and the pictures wobbly, the production proved to have a simple, winning charm. ![]() The print was one of those recently turned up in the Library of Congress archive, the recording having previously been thought lost. Since these notes - which are one of the joys of cinema-going in London - invariably track down reviews for the most recondite productions, it was clear that the production on offer was both obscure and undocumented. ![]() The BFI Southbank programme notes for tonight’s presentation of a 1960 schools production of Oliver Goldsmith’s 1773 comedy consisted mostly of paragraphs from about the original play. ![]() ![]() ![]() You can imagine a queue as an individual worker filing documents away, and obviously, more workers mean faster filing. By default, CrystalDiskMark tests at queue depths of 1, 8, and 32, though you can manually increase the queue depth and test that way if you wish. Queue depth refers to how many queues are handling I/O requests at any given time, and with more queues open to transfer data, there's a greater potential for faster transfer speeds. Depending on other factors, the performance difference between sequential and random can range from minor to extremely large. Random workloads involve data that isn't sequential or contiguous and may be spread all over the drive. In a sequential workload, the data the SSD is accessing is physically contiguous and can be accessed one after the other in a sequence (hence sequential). The main difference between these two kinds of workloads is how the data is organized. The two basic types of tests CrystalDiskMark uses are sequential and random, denoted by SEQ and RND respectively. random, block size, queue depth, and threads. CrystalDiskMark benchmarks come down to the four important testing parameters: sequential vs. Leaving it at the default of 1GB is completely fine, as it's a realistic size for a lot of data that you may access on your storage.ĬrystalDiskMark comes with four preset benchmarks, but if you look in the advanced settings, you can actually customize what the benchmark tests for and get different results. ![]() This is the file size that CrystalDiskMark creates to perform read and write tests on, and it ranges from 16MB to 64GB. With American Idiot they have a real problem, because, as Bullet in a Bible’s very existence proves, their big Message Record is also a Monstrous Hit. At least those songs are from an era when Green Day sounded like a band that didn’t give a shit. Green Day continue through the “Jesus of Suburbia” suite, “Holiday,” and “Are We the Waiting” before throwing in “Longview” for old times’ sake, which leads into “Brain Stew” and “Basket Case” for the only stretch when Bullet sounds really alive. ![]() “I’m not a part of a redneck agenda!” Armstrong rails at the disc’s outset, and the crowd of 65,000-plus go completely bonkers. ![]() That’s what the band's new CD/DVD set Bullet in a Bible documents, recounting their show this past summer at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes. But American Idiot’s rage seems more like artifice now, especially when it’s performed from a stage of Stonesian proportions. In theory Green Day’s still singing to those suburban mudslingers, the ’90s kids who grew up to find only apathy, fear, and nothingness beyond the fast food wrappers and blaring televisions. “September” itself was the soggiest, a melodramatic wallow in the vein of “Good Riddance.” And it contained none of the danger and fun that Billie Joe Armstrong had congratulated himself for bringing back to rock’n’roll during his acceptance of the Best Rock Album Grammy for American Idiot. The record still had its thematic scope, and subtitled set pieces, but with the singles played to death it was starting to sound really, really flat. But by “Wake Me Up When September Ends” it was unclear what Idiot was supposed to mean in the first place. And “Holiday” had its “HEY!”s and “AMEN!”s. Sure, there was the thrilling riff and yawp of the album’s title track, way back when. ![]() More than a decade later, their superstardom is a mascara-clouded mess of sloganeering, middle age, and punk rock lip service, and the firebrand moments in 2004’s American Idiot diminish with every millionth unit shifted. Back then they smirked at the world from underneath green hair dye, and goaded suburban children into gleeful mud fights. Over the past two years, Green Day have reclaimed their Dookie platform of yore. ![]() ![]() ![]() They are there to stay, a testament to the artist, the life and its sentence, and the guard who gives him a reason to serve his time. The final paintings are done as frescos, painted on the concrete walls deep in the prison interior. Cadazio berates him and promotes him as a homicidal maniac, and when the painter completes his masterpiece collection, the madness is revealed as the true genius. Rosenthaler becomes an art world sensation for his mental illness and violence as much as he does for his impressionistic visions. Cadazio wants a biography as a patron, which is as much collateral as the paint, egg yolks, and prison soap brushed over tarp. She is an electrifying muse and knows how to jump start his cables.Īnderson is also making comments on the construction of an artist. Seydoux conjures her inner Morticia Addams by reminding Moses that torture is Simone’s job. He fills in all the loose doodles of his subject, compulsively objectifying Rosenthaler as a truly tortured artist. After all, Rosenthaler is a man whose secondary motivation is the terror of the Splatter Brigade, other jailed artists who taunt each other to greatness with threats of grievous harm.Īnderson, who also made Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, and Moonrise Kingdom, is an obsessive. Cadazio makes Rosenthaler one of the world’s premiere visionaries in the art world, based on “one small scribbly overrated picture.” The painter with a 50-year sentence is confined to deadlines for the first time in his life but manages to keep the art dealer hostage with promises of perfection. The two fellow convicts then proceed to imprison each other. ![]() “All artists sell all their work, it’s what makes you an artist,” the art dealer explains to the paint-splattered inmate. Rosenthaler is reluctant to sell the painting, Simone Naked, Cell Block J Hobby Room, when Julian Cadazio (Brody’s dealer who’s briefly incarcerated for the white-collar crime of sales tax evasion) sweetly bribes his way into the Maximum Security for the Mentally Deranged unit. There is a woman to be seen there in the painting, but she is as elusive as the smile on the Mona Lisa. But his vision is interpretive, and the rendition is abstract. Rosenthaler could paint her as she stands, perfectly rendered on a canvas as recognizable as a traditional still life, or a sparrow hastily scrawled with a burnt matchbook to prove his gifts. She is his muse, standing in impossible postures for hours while he captures her innermost beauty. He beheaded two bartenders in a psychotic rage, the first “by accident” and the second in self-defense.Ĭonfined to the psychiatric ward, and often fastened in a straitjacket, in Ennui Prison, Rosenthaler had put down his brushes when incarcerated, and only asked for art supplies after falling in love with the guard Simone ( Léa Seydoux). ![]() In it, Moses Rosenthaler (Benicio del Toro, with Tony Revolori as the younger character in flashbacks) is a genius artist serving a life sentence for a double homicide. The first vignette, “The Concrete Masterpiece,” is presented as an art lecture by French Dispatch magazine staff writer J.K.L. But the opening sequence of The French Dispatch proves any local can be worthy of mention in The New Yorker’s “The Talk of the Town” column. ![]() You might think nothing happens there, and when it does, no one cares. In the film, the fictional French Dispatch magazine started in Liberty, Kansas and is now published in the sardonically-named fictional town of Ennui-sur-Blasé, France. Liebling, James Baldwin, and Rosamond Bernier, it was idiosyncratic and utterly original. The French Dispatch is Anderson’s homage to The New Yorker during the magazine’s heyday under founder/editor Harold Ross, fictionalized in the film as Arthur Howitzer, Jr., portrayed eccentrically by Bill Murray. The first vignette in the three-story film exhibits how commerce in the art world is a cut-throat business, especially when it’s personal. Adrien Brody plays a similar art curator to those at Christie’s in Wes Anderson’s anthology film, The French Dispatch. Van Gogh was an unknown artist at the time. The artist created it after dropping a package off at a brothel for a woman named Rachel, telling her to “guard this object with your life.” That was in December 1888. Vincent van Gogh’s painting Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear sold for $71.5 million at a November 1998 Christie’s auction. ![]() |
